Huis Clos

One manor. One victim. One culprit.

A painted house plan, portraits, a statement under every name. Place each person on the plan, then accuse the one left alone with the victim.

  1. Read the statements
  2. Place everyone on the plan
  3. Accuse the culprit

Inspector LebrunGood evening! I'm Inspector Lebrun.

The drawing room

Who was alone with the count?

The app's first lesson, with its real plan and real statements. Tap a person in the list, then a square on the plan.

Lesson 1 · The inspector's lessons

Inspector Lebrun

Good evening! I'm Inspector Lebrun. Look at Hector, on row 3. Outside the library, only A3 and D3 remain. On D3 nobody could be further east than him, yet Vernet is. Hector can only be on A3. Tap Hector in the list, then the square circled in gold.

The people and their statements

    • The count was not in the dining room.
    • The count was further north than Albane.
    • Albane was in the kitchen.
    • Albane was right next to a table.
    • Vernet was on row 1.
    • Hector was not in the library.
    • Hector was on row 3.
    • Hector was further west than Vernet.

Rules. Only one person per row and per column. You can stand on the floor and an armchair, not on a table. The culprit is the only person left alone with the victim in a room.

Keyboard: arrows to move, 1 to 4 to pick a person, Enter to place, X for a cross, Backspace to empty the square.

If you get stuck

A hint in three steps

The inspector doesn't hand over the answer straight away. Each step counts as one hint.

  1. Where to look

He shows you where to rest your eyes.

  2. Explain it

He walks through the deduction, ruled-out squares in red.

  3. Show the square

He places the person on the plan.

The library

Every grid tells a case.

A case file when it opens, a confession when it closes, a card to share. The same case always tells the same story.

  1. Screenshot: a case's opening file, with the evening, the people present and the challenges

    The file opens

The date, the evening, who found the body, who was there and their role, your mission and your challenges.

  2. Screenshot: the painted plan of a case in progress, three portraits already placed, statements under each person

    You rebuild the scene

Floors are painted room by room, and furniture goes by the name used in the statements. A statement that holds gets a tick, a contradicted one turns red.

  3. The Case Closed card to share: stamp, blurred culprit portrait, blacked-out name, magnifiers, time and rank

    The case is closed

The stamp, a confession unique to each character, the weapon according to the room, and the line that explains why it was them. What remains is a card to share, culprit blurred and name blacked out: it spoils nothing for anyone.

The exhibits

  • the silver candlestick
  • a heavy atlas
  • the crystal decanter
  • the rolling pin
  • the bronze paperweight
  • the copper watering can
  • the duchess's necklace
  • the Zurich gold bars
  • a vial of belladonna
  • toad powder

The smoking room

Thirty-six faces, and no guaranteed innocent.

Each series has its own portrait gallery. They come back from case to case: you can recognise them even at tiny size on the plan.

The ballroom

153 cases in the app, all playable offline.

Three lessons, sixty evenings at the manor, then three series where the culprit rule changes. They open after ten cases solved at the manor.

60 cases

The Manor

Sixty evenings that end badly.

  • Ground floor

    Six guests, straightforward clues. 6 × 6.

  • First floor

    Seven guests, crossing alibis. 7 × 7.

  • The attic

    Eight guests, you'll have to assume. 8 × 8.

3 lessons

The inspector's lessons

In 4 × 4 then 5 × 5, Inspector Lebrun teaches the moves as you play: he shows everything, then he explains, then he stays quiet unless you slip.

  • Screenshot: the plan of The Heist, tiles, lockers, cameras

Sealed · opens after 10 manor cases

    The Heist

Find the bank's only blind spot.

Cameras, lockers, a counter with its till. The accomplice is the one who was with Mr Brack out of the cameras' sight, and their yellow beams show on the plan.

    30 grids

  • Screenshot: the bar in The Tankard, coasters and numbered stools

Sealed · opens after 10 manor cases

    The Poisoned Tankard

Someone poured poison into the knight's tankard.

The plan becomes a bar: numbered stools as rows, rounds of service as columns. The poisoner sat next to Gauvain and was served before him.

    30 grids

  • Screenshot: False Witness, statements with portraits, then the evidence and notes

Sealed · opens after 10 manor cases

    False Witness

One evening. Only one is lying.

A time × place timeline at Maître Garnier's. Four or five witnesses, and one of them lies about everything. Rebuild the evening and expose the liar.

    30 files

The kitchen

One more case, every day.

Something to come back to between evenings at the manor, with nothing to download.

Case of the Day

The same grid for everyone, worked out on your device from the date. A streak of evenings in a row, and a telegram to share, without the culprit's name.

The inspector's training

Quick Look

The reverse of a case: the scene is already rebuilt, a statement drops, true or false before time runs out. Plans keep growing, time shrinks from 9 to 4 seconds, streaks earn bonuses, three mistakes and it's over. Your record stays.

And around the game

“Case in progress” widget
Small and medium: the floor, the time, the people placed, your streak. Tap it to resume the case.
“Case closed” card
An image to share at the end of a case, culprit blurred and redacted.
Evening reminder
Off by default, at the time you choose. No reminder on evenings when you've already solved a case.
Shortcuts
“Resume the investigation”, “Next case” and “Case of the Day” from Siri and Shortcuts.

The study

Three magnifiers per case, seven ranks to climb.

A solved case earns one investigation point, each magnifier one more. You never lose a magnifier by replaying.

  • Without hints

    You didn't call the inspector.

  • First try

    No false accusation.

  • On time

4 to 15 minutes depending on the case.
